Cheryl Ann Thomas is a contemporary American ceramic artist known for her hand-built pottery that blends sculptural forms with functional design. With a BFA in ceramics from The Art Center College of Design, her work revolves around coiled porcelain. Traditionally, when coil building, the craftsman smooths the coils after building the structure of the vessel but Thomas leaves the coil exposed with the imprints of her hand still visible. The markings left by Thomas are a permanent record of her interaction with the material and process.
Thomas’s pieces feature tactile surfaces and asymmetrical forms, often exploring themes like transience, the delicacy of existence, and the connection between humans and nature. Her ceramics, ranging from functional vessels to abstract sculptures, are celebrated for their craftsmanship and thoughtfulness, offering a unique perspective on human intervention and the experience of creation, loss, and fragility.
