Jumpei Kaneshige is a Bizen-ware ceramist based in Inbe city, Bizen. He graduated from Waseda University and received his Graduate degree from Long Island university Graduate School of Sculpture. Bizen Ware is characterized by its simplicity and materiality. Simply put, it is wood-fired without glaze, a true expression of the clay used.
Jumpei is part of one of the original shokunin (honorable craftsman) families in Bizen. Before and after each kiln opening, the three generations of potters gathers for a meal which is cherished by Jumpei as a moment for affection of both family and clay. Some of his earliest memories are in his father’s studio learning that clay could come alive. His sense of imagination has not left his process and he considers having fun to be one of the most integral parts of his work as he captures the life of each piece. For Jumpei, and many other Bizen potters, the “flavor” of the clay is integral so he works using clay in close proximity to his studio. The proximity helps him make pieces with intention and reverence to the clay and the craft.
Despite the legacy he carries, he still considers himself to be just another potter and takes great inspiration from his peers and contemporaries. He work has been celebrated across the globe for its traditional technique imbued a playful style.
