Kyoko Hori works in a process she calls physicalisation (shintaisei). She coined this word to describe becoming one with the clay as she works. A ceramist who uses coil building to dialogue with the clay, developing shape as she gets a sense of the piece as a living entity. Within this process, Hori is inspired by the collective memories of invertebrates that mammals carry in their bodies. Due to the realization that she too is a part of the collective memory, Hori began infusing the pieces with the dynamism and flux of life. Hori’s work is largely in porcelain and has been exhibited internationally.
