Makoto Yamaguchi (b. 1978) is a ceramic artist from Seto City Japan. Coming from six generations of ceramists, Yamaguchi faced the complexity of combining his family traditions with a contemporary vision. He is known for his skillful mastery of traditional techniques, Oribe, Shino, and Kiseto-Yaki, and his innovative approach to form and glaze. After honing his skills at Kasrn Rouen (Kasen Pottery Studio), he has become a well established independent artist with a unique sensibility that has earned him a respected place in the global ceramic art community.
Largely, the work he produces is glazed stoneware that takes on a traditional form. A signature aspect of his work has developed a style in pursuit of “Utsushi” which means “reproduction or copy from traditional piece, in order to study techniques.” His works are prized for their tactile quality, elegant simplicity, and thoughtful expression of natural and philosophical themes.
