Shigemasa Higashida is a renowned Japanese ceramic artist celebrated for his mastery of traditional pottery techniques and his open-minded imagination. Born in 1955 in Kurahashichou, in the Hiroshima Prefecture. In 1978, He graduated from Shimonoseki City University, Faculty of Economics and did not consider becoming a potter until 1984. Through years of disciplined study, he honed his technical skills while developing a deep respect for traditional Japanese aesthetics. In 1986, he constructed a studio in Koganei-shi, Tokyo and began working mainly in Shino and Oribe styles. Higashida's work is characterized by its dynamic interplay between form, texture, and glaze.
In the 1980s, Higashida gained international recognition after participating in several prominent exhibitions in Japan, Europe, and the United States. His ability to bridge the gap between traditional Japanese pottery and modern artistic expression earned him accolades and invitations to teach workshops and lectures globally.
Higashida continues to maintain his studio and kiln in Tokyo. He has been a selected participant in international ceramics exhibitions and gives lectures on the Oribe and Shino traditions. His dedication to preserving and innovating within the Japanese ceramic tradition has solidified his legacy as a pivotal figure in the world of contemporary ceramics. His work is featured in museums and private collections.
