Takeuchi Shugo’s feelings toward pottery gets deeper and deeper with age. He is a Mashiko based ceramist who primarily fires Mino, Shino, and Tribe ash-glazed and black wares. He was salaryman at a company until visiting Mashiko and discovering the work of Shoji Hamada. In 1968, he had established his own kiln and was making wares. He is known for his bucket-shaped forms with heavy walls, bold colors, and deep cuts. He was awarded the Tochigi Prefectural Cultural Prize in 1998 and has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 potters for Honcho Geijutsu magazine. His work can be seen in many public collections in Japan and abroad and he continues to be seen as an excellent craftsman of Mino ware.
